AI voice agents: what happens when your business answers every call
An AI on the phone is not a gimmick when the alternative is voicemail. Here is what one does on a normal day, and when you should not bother yet.
The question is never whether an AI can answer a phone. It can. The question is what happens to the caller, the job and your afternoon when it does. This is a walk through a live setup on an electrical business line.
The call comes in
The agent answers on the second ring with the business name. It asks what the caller needs. A homeowner says the safety switch keeps tripping. The agent asks where they are, whether anything is sparking or smells like burning, and when they would like someone out.
It decides what to do
- If the caller describes an emergency, the agent transfers to the owner's mobile and sends an SMS with the address.
- If it is a standard job, the agent offers available slots from the real calendar and books it.
- If it needs a quote, the agent collects the details, explains the owner will call back, and logs everything.
What the owner sees
A notification with the caller's name, number, suburb, job type and urgency. The full transcript is in the contact record in GoHighLevel. When the owner calls back, they already know the job.
What the caller experiences
Someone answered. That is the whole point. Callers who would have hung up on voicemail and rung the next business instead had a conversation and got a booking or a callback time. If asked, the agent says it is an automated assistant. Most callers do not ask.
When you should not bother yet
If you take a handful of calls a day and you can usually answer, a voice agent is more than you need. Switch on missed-call text-back first, fix your reviews, and revisit when call volume or ad spend goes up. Pav will tell you this on the call if it applies to you.
What it costs
A build fee for scripting and testing against your real call types, then a monthly running cost for the platform and call minutes. Compared with a receptionist it is a fraction of the cost and it does not go home at five, but the comparison that matters is against the jobs currently going to voicemail.
Want to hear one? Book a call and Pav will ring you back through an agent so you can judge it as a caller would.
